Although the surrounding islands are overcrowded and bustling with tourism,
Statia remains untouched. Add to the quiet setting hospitable people,
a prolific history, beautiful scenery and premier diving and you have
an island with a perfect atmosphere for fun.
Underwater there are many shipwrecks which were laid to rest over 200 years ago.
They are now corralized, but still offer a chance to find an undiscovered
piece of history. You can search for clay pipes, shards or eve one of the
famed blue glass trading beads said to be used to purchase Manhattan.
Rich History
One of the most interesting things about Statia is how this island
interacted with the United States and Britain during the War of
Independence. Visit Fort Orange overlooking the bay or the St. Eustatius
Historical Museum (which was voted one of the best in the Caribbean.) You
can walk with a guide or take a tour in the comfort of an air-conditioned
bus. The fort and museum are located in the heart of Orangestad just
above the "SLAVE PATH."
On the west side of the island, near Lowertown, divers and snorkelers
alike can explore partially sunken warehouses and the old city wall just
a short swim from the shore.
